Wow, It's been a while since my last actual blog post. There is a lot going on in 6th grade so I wanted to be sure to put it on the blog so you can easily access the information.
*Students not participating in school spirit week must be in regular ALA dress attire. *Spirit week outfits and clothing must be school appropriate. Any student that violates this will be asked to call home for a change of clothes and not allowed to participate in any remaining themed days.

Wow, 2019 already, where did the time go. A New Year is a time for a new start. Lets encourage our kids to come back to school renewed and ready for the best year ever. If they had behavior problems, less than stellar grades, etc. encourage them to put that behind them and start anew. They CAN achieve anything they set their mind to and we are here to help make that happen. This week let's take a look at an article from Parents..com about helping our kids make New Year's Resolutions. In the article, 8 Ways to Help Kids Make New Year's Resolutions Author Wendy Schuman explains how New Year's resolutions aren't just for adults.. She gives simple and practical tips on how to help your kids make New Year's resolutions. "Making resolutions with your children can be fun and exciting, a time for growth and change, and an opportunity for family bonding.". Open Enrollment Application PeriodThe Open Enrollment Application Period begins today and last until Feb 28th. The application can be found here and on the ALA website. Current students do not have to re-apply but do need to fill out this recommitment form to help us determine how many slots will be available for the lottery. Recommitment forms need to be completed by January 31st. Please help spread the word about Open Enrollment for grades 6-9 for next school year.
I can't believe it is December already! Time sure is flying by. We have really enjoyed getting to know and teaching your children. This is a great time of year to emphasize our RAISE value SERVICE. "Studies have shown that kids who volunteer experience a positive effect on their grades, attitudes toward education, and self-esteem." The linked article "Helping Your Kids Give Back: 11 Fun Holiday Service Ideas for You and Your Family." will give you ideas how you can serve with your children during the holidays. If your child has performed their service project for Salvation Army and has not turned in the money to their Advisory Teacher please don't forget to send it in tomorrow. Gifts need to be purchased Monday evening.
Thanksgiving Break is a great time to evaluate if you need to restock any school supplies.. Make sure your student has an adequate supply of paper and pencils. Does your student have a stylus, headphones/earbuds? Do they need a power bank to recharge their iPad on the go? It is cold and flu season are you able to send in extra tissues and Clorox wipes?
Many Thanks For All You Do!We would like to thank you for all of the donations of food that were sent in for the CUOC food drive, classroom supplies, supplies for fall festival and for all the volunteers for fall festival. *School is in Session Tuesday, November 6th*Fall FestivalFriday November 2nd We held our first 6th Grade fall Festival. The Students worked hard on their projects and did a great job. However, the project is not over and we need your help. This week in Digital Media we will be working on photo editing the photo booth pictures and creating a highlights video. If you or your child have photos or videos of the fall festival I would appreciate it if you would email me a copy at [email protected]. Some of these pictures may also be used in the ALA yearbook. I look forward to seeing all of your wonderful videos and photos. Second Quarter Begins TomorrowThe first quarter ended on Friday and the second quarter begins tomorrow. The transition period between Elementary School and Middle School has come to an end. This means that tomorrow all rules and policies will be strictly enforced. A few policies to keep in mind.: Late work will be accepted only up to 3 days late. Each an assignment is late the maximum score achievable will decrease by 10 points. On the 4th Day the student will receive a 0. All students must come to school with a fully charged iPad. If you child leaves the iPad at home they will not be prepared for class and will not be given a loaner. As well, they will not be able to charge the iPads in class therefore they also be unprepared.
Grading Period ExtensionThe first quarter grading period has been extended to November 2nd. Due to a late start to the school year and two hurricanes. The ALA board voted on Wednesday, October 24th to extend the grading period. Report cards will go home November 9th.
Late Work Policy All work is expected to be turned in on time unless a student is absent. If a student does not turn in their assignment on time, they will have 3 days to complete it and turn it in. Each day that an assignment is turned in late, 10 points will be deducted from their grade. The lowest a student will receive on an assignment is a 50, IF they turn it in by the 3rd day after the due date. After the 3rd day, the student will earn a grade of Zero.. We understand that the adjustment to middle school can be quite difficult for some so up to this point we have given much grace and allowed extensions on projects and accepted work past 3 days late. This will not longer be the case. We are moving into the 2nd grading period and the late work policy will be strictly enforced. sWe are starting a new section of our blog that will have links to online articles you may find useful in your survival in parenting a middle schooler. Middle School can be the most difficult time for both students and parents. I've personally been through this twice already and have am currently parenting a 7th grader. The amount of drama, emotions, and hormone is enough to drive any sane parent crazy. This weeks article is "Motivating Middle Schoolers: A Parent’s Guide to Navigating Academics" from Parent Toolkit. The article references use of the school counselor. We currently do not have a school counselor. I recommend you instead utilize your child's leadership advisory teacher as a liaison. The Leadership Advisory teacher spends the most time with your child and most likely know them the best. Unfortunately, we did not make it through a 3rd full week of school. We hope that all made it through the storm with no damage. As a result of the school closings several things that were supposed to happen were delayed.
If you choose not to participate in ALA's 1:1 iPad program please be informed that our expectation is that every student has access to a device at home to complete online and digital homework assignments.
